MUSICALLY SPEAKING by Gladness Gold
Ehmmm (clears throat)
I wanna say some things that I have noticed.
By God's Grace, I am a Musicologist (in the making) and in my 4 years of study, I have learnt some things and I will like to share with you. Just read on. I may get some lashings but it's okay.
You see, we music ministers love to "Spiritualize" almost all our terms. I just want to point out some things so that we can create a balance and so that we don't teach people the wrong things. I understand that there are some terms that we use in Christendom but... Let's just go through some examples
1. "I am not here to sing, I am here to Minister"
Dear, Musically Speaking, you are a singer, Spiritually speaking, you're a Minister. So you're both.
What you are doing is ministering by singing to the Lord
2. "I am not an Artiste, I am a Minister"
Dear, Musically Speaking, you are first an Artiste.
"A music artist is someone who creates, performs and releases music either independently or through a record label."
See, because you do it on an altar doesn't separate you from being an Artiste. And did you see the word perform? We are coming to that.
You're both an Artiste and a music minister.
3. "I am not here to entertain, I am here to Worship"
Yes we know that you're to lead us in worship. But Musically Speaking, if your music don't entertain me, you can't lead me in worship with it. The reason why you sing the songs you sing while leading the worship session is because you love the songs. In simple terms, the song entertained you or appealed to you. So...
It is this statement that makes us produce wack Christian artiste's. We really need to understand that music communicates better when it is enjoyed by the person or people listening. It is the same with worship leading.
4. "I am not here to perform"
Dear, Musically Speaking, performance is any musical act performed on a stage in front of an audience.
So what you are doing is leading worship songs in front of fellow worshippers, so Musically Speaking, you are a performer.
I respect the fact that the Holy Spirit backs up our performance to help us minister to the people. But know that you perform on stage or the altar as w call it.
I have performed in some secular shows here in school and Dear, they don't understand "as I minister, remain blessed" this can be used in the church. But in a mixed multitude, you gotta know the right terms to use as you may not only sing in church or church programs.
This post is not to condemn but to correct some things that have been registered in our minds software already.
God bless you for reading this
